Pauli Suominen, Central Clinic of Eating Disorders of Seinajoki, Finland
The 1st meeting was held in Central Clinic of Eating Disorders of Seinajoki, Finland, March 15th, 2017
It started with the opening words of Matija Dunaj, principal of Fitness Academy, about the Academy and the project. The psychiatrist Pauli Suominen introduced his work to us. He belives that the way to go with the treatment of eating disorder (anorexia) is through treatment of their unsecurity or anxiety as a cause of the illness. It is all about creating habits and replacing one bad with another that is good and healthy. Accent is on trust. If a person has a personal trainer and the trainer suspects a disorder, with no trust established, the client will feel uncomfortable and leave. Opinion is to create a questionnaire to that level that it can indicate a problem for sure. It was great to hear that The Central Clinic has groups exercising with physiotherapist and trainers. The meeting ended with a conversation about the phase where a kinesiologyst can be included in the treatment and about mutual communication for the further work on the project.
The 2nd meeting was held in Trainer 4 You office, Espoo, Finland, March 16th, 2017

Annette Evokari, fitness trainer
The meeting was held in trainer 4 You office with two trainers who have experience in training with people with eating disorders.
They too, emphasized that they needed time to establish trust with the client before they could get the confession about their problem with eating disorder.
We agreed that fitness industry can help if collaborating with other experts in creating standards for treating eating disorders like anorexia.
The activity for the patient should be fun and something they enjoy in. If not, the activity will not help dealing with stres.
During the meeting we became aware that education for trainers should include education about nutrition. It should also be explained that trainers are usually people that are used to sucseeding and it is hard for them to understand a person with low level of motivation.

Tanja Tiainen, The Eating Disorder Asociation of Finland
Tanja Tiainen is a executive director of the Association that helps families of people suffering with eating disorder. They organize suport groups, web pages (Omneatupa), help lines. Their volonteres are ”experts by experience”, ex patients who had any kind of eating disorder. They have good practice organizing educating for new ”experts”, writing guide books, leaflets with supporting words.
Tanja said how difficult it is sometimes at the suport and relaxing groups. The patients have it hard to relax sometimes and they feel nauseate.
A good point was made, the choice of an exercise after the treatment can tell us a lot about the state that a patient is in at the moment.
One more diference we have noticed is a functional therapist, who helps patients with learning patterns like holding, chewing, everyday things in life.
The meeting ended with conclusion to continue with the communication and suport for the project.
